Many people wait for neck or back pain to become severe before
seeking care. Others are frightened by words such as “arthritis,”
“degeneration,” or “herniated disc” on an imaging report and assume surgery is
inevitable. In reality, an imaging diagnosis does not by itself determine how
you will feel or which treatment you need.
A thorough examination can help identify the likely pain source,
screen for warning signs, and determine whether conservative chiropractic care
or
Decompression Therapy
is a reasonable next step.
Common signs of a disc-related problem
A herniated disc or irritated spinal nerve may cause:
- Neck or lower-back pain
- Pain traveling into an arm or leg
- Sciatica
- Tingling or numbness
- Muscle weakness
- Pain aggravated by coughing, sneezing, sitting, bending, or certain movements
These symptoms can have more than one cause. A chiropractor
should perform orthopedic and neurological testing rather than assuming every
case of radiating pain comes from a disc.
What arthritis and degeneration may feel like
Spinal arthritis or degeneration may be associated with
stiffness, aching, reduced mobility, pain after prolonged positions, and
recurring flare-ups. However, imaging findings and symptoms do not always
match. Some discomfort may come from muscles, joints, discs, nerves, hips,
shoulders, or a combination of structures.
The first goal of an evaluation is clarity: What is most likely
contributing to your symptoms, and is there anything that requires referral?
Is early care better?
Early evaluation does not mean everyone needs a long treatment
plan. It means identifying potentially important symptoms before they become
harder to manage, then choosing the least invasive appropriate option.
For many uncomplicated neck and back conditions, conservative
care may be considered before injections or surgery. A plan may include
activity modification, chiropractic care, exercises, ergonomic changes, and—in
selected cases—Decompression Therapy.
No conservative provider should promise to prevent all future
degeneration or guarantee that surgery will never be necessary. Some conditions
require medical co-management or surgical consultation. The purpose of
conservative care is to improve function and symptoms when it can be done
safely.
What chiropractic care can do
Based on the examination, chiropractic care may help by:
- Improving restricted spinal or extremity motion
- Reducing pain and muscle guarding
- Addressing movement and postural contributors
- Helping you return gradually to meaningful activity
- Providing exercises for mobility, strength, and stability
If disc-related compression appears to be part of the problem,
Decompression Therapy
may be considered to gently unload the involved area. Progress should be
monitored through symptoms and objective findings, and the plan should change
if you are not responding as expected.
When surgery or another referral may be needed
Conservative care is not always the right starting point.
Depending on the history and examination, referral for imaging, medical
treatment, injections, or a surgical opinion may be appropriate.
Seek emergency evaluation for:
- New loss of bowel or bladder control
- Numbness in the groin or saddle area
- Rapidly worsening or substantial muscle weakness
- Symptoms after significant trauma
- Fever, unexplained weight loss, or severe unrelenting spinal pain
- Chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke-like symptoms, or another medical emergency
What to expect at Simply Health Chiropractic
Your visit begins with a history and examination. Relevant
imaging may be reviewed or ordered when clinically indicated. We will explain
the findings, discuss appropriate options, and let you know if your condition
is not a good fit for chiropractic or Decompression Therapy.
Care is individualized. A patient with mild arthritis and
stiffness should not automatically receive the same plan as someone with a
herniated disc and nerve symptoms.
