Spinal discs are often described as shock absorbers, but they
are living tissues that respond to movement, pressure, injury, and time. If you
have a disc bulge, herniated disc, sciatica, or degenerative disc disease,
understanding how a disc functions can make your treatment options much less
confusing.

patients with neck or lower-back disc problems.

What is a spinal disc?

Each spinal disc sits between two vertebrae. A tougher outer
ring surrounds a softer, water-rich center. The disc helps distribute force and
allows the spine to bend and move.

Unlike many tissues, an adult spinal disc has a limited direct
blood supply. Much of its nutrient exchange occurs through the vertebral
endplates and is influenced by diffusion and changes in mechanical pressure.
Regular movement helps create the changing loads that healthy spinal tissues
need.

What happens during degeneration?

With degeneration, a disc may lose water content, height,
flexibility, and its ability to distribute force. Small tears may develop in
the outer fibers. The disc can bulge, and in some cases its inner material can
push through weakened outer fibers, producing a herniated disc.

Degeneration can exist without symptoms. Pain may develop when
surrounding joints or tissues become irritated, inflammation occurs, or disc
material and swelling affect a nearby nerve. In the lower back, nerve
irritation may produce
sciatica.
In the neck, it may cause pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness into the
shoulder, arm, or hand.

What laboratory research teaches us about loading

Animal and laboratory studies have shown that prolonged
compression can reduce disc height and alter disc cells, matrix, endplates, and
vascular channels. In some models, unloading or distraction was followed by
improvements in disc height, hydration, tissue organization, and vascularity.

These studies explain biological mechanisms, but they cannot be
translated into a guarantee that Decompression Therapy will regenerate a human
disc. Clinically, the more appropriate goal is to reduce aggravating load and
symptoms, improve function, and help the patient tolerate rehabilitative
movement.

What is Decompression Therapy?

Decompression Therapy is a form of motorized, controlled
traction. The patient lies comfortably on a specialized table while a
programmed pull-and-release pattern gently unloads a targeted region of the
cervical or lumbar spine.

Depending on the patient and condition, potential goals include:

  • Reducing mechanical pressure on an irritated disc
  • Decreasing nerve-root irritation
  • Improving comfort with movement
  • Supporting fluid exchange within the disc
  • Creating a window for exercise and rehabilitation

Decompression Therapy is not surgery, does not involve
injections, and should not be painful. Some patients feel gentle stretching or
pressure changes during a session.

Can Decompression Therapy help a herniated disc?

Some patients with a disc bulge, herniated disc, degenerative
disc disease, sciatica, or radiating arm pain may be candidates. Results vary,
and success depends on factors such as the source and severity of symptoms,
neurological findings, overall health, activity, and adherence to the care
plan.

Decompression Therapy is not appropriate for every condition.
Fracture, certain forms of instability, some surgical hardware situations,
infection, malignancy in the treatment region, and other medical factors may
change the recommendation. A qualified evaluation is essential.

Why combine decompression with chiropractic care?

Decompression Therapy focuses on unloading. Chiropractic care
may address restricted joint motion and broader mechanical patterns. Exercise
builds the strength, mobility, and control needed outside the office. Used
together when appropriate, these approaches can support both symptom relief and
improved function.

For arthritis or degeneration, the realistic objective is not to
make every imaging change disappear. It is to help you move more comfortably,
reduce flare-ups, improve capacity, and remain active.
